Historic Arizona Route 66 Geocaching Series
Arizona’s Route 66 Communities Launch Geocaching Program
The Historic AZ 66 Geocaching Project, a series of geocaches along Arizona’s stretch of the “Mother Road,” is a partnership between the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona and several of Arizona’s Route 66 communities.
The project was created as a way for these entities to come
together and celebrate Arizona’s State Centennial on February 14,
2012. The series of 66 geocaches, which has an official Arizona
Centennial Legacy Project designation from the Arizona Historical Advisory
Commission, debuted on April 1, 2012.
The project was designed to provide an interesting and fun experience for travelers along Historic Route 66 in Arizona. “Cachers” participating in this outdoor treasure hunting game will get a unique look at the history of these Route 66 communities, sites, and attractions.
Each “Historic AZ 66” geocache includes a logbook, “First to Find” prize, and historic image with a brief description. The Association and its partner communities hope this “power cache” will continue to grow as we find more sites to highlight with historic images.
More caches will be realesed in the future, eventually totaling 100 caches for Arizona's 100 years of Statehood.
Look for project updates on this site, as well as on the websites and Facebook pages of the partner organizations listed below. More information on the growing phenomenon of geocaching is available at Geocaching.com.
